Irish Masters of Beagles Association
National Hare Survey Republic of Ireland
The Dept of the environment engaged the Quercus organisation, which has
carried out all the recent Hare Surveys in the North of Ireland, to
conduct a similar exercise in the Republic using the exact same
methods. The survey was carried out during 2006 & 2007 and the full
report is available for download from the National Parks and
Wildlife Service website at
This 64 page document makes very interesting reading.
We are very pleased that
1. the Number of hares in Ireland rose from 233,000
in 2006 to 535,000 in 2007. This is a similar density of hares found in
N.I.
2. There were no Brown Hares found so the scare put about
recently of the Brown variety acting against the Irish Hare like
the Grey Squirrel is false.
3. Their recommendations for further studies and surveys is, again the same as for the North.
