IMBA       Irish Masters of                Beagles Association

The Organisation of the Association

The IMBA is the National controlling body for the sport on the island of Ireland.

Beagling has been carried on in Ireland for over  2,000 years and is the oldest organised sport of any kind on this Island. It is the sport of breeding a hound - a Beagle - which will find the scent of a hare in the hare’s natural environment and follow that scent through all the evasive tactics which the hare uses, puzzling out checks and weakening scents etc. Beagle hunts only hunt Hares and are exclusively followed on foot. The Hunting Season is from the 26th Sept to the 28/9th Feb annually with provision to hunt under licence for the month of March.

It is not a sport that sets out with the intention of taking or killing the hare.

It is the long tradition of the sport that it is forbidden to hunt any hare that has been handled by humans and this is reflected in the Rules of this Association.
